"Experts have offered numerous reasons. Depression is common, and economic struggles have added to our stress and anxiety. Television ads promote antidepressants, and insurance plans usually cover them, even while limiting talk therapy. But a recent study suggests another explanation; that the condition is being over-diagnosed on a remarkable scale." (source) To understand why this is happening, perhaps take a look here.
Harvard University states, "Suddenly stopping an antidepressant can cause a number of physical and emotional problems that include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, sweating or flushing, sleep disturbances, tremors, irritability, or strange sensations. The best way to minimize or prevent these problems is by gradually lowering the dose (tapering off) over weeks to months. Sometimes this process involves substituting other medications for the one you are quitting."
"While antidepressants aren’t clinically addictive, many experts believe they can cause dependence. This is partly because taking them reinforces the idea that a person can’t cope without them, and also because of the severe withdrawal symptoms many suffer when coming off certain types of the drugs. ‘You get dependent on them physically because you are putting chemicals into your body,’ says Caroline (patient on anti-depressants for 30 years). ‘Then you get used to them psychologically, because you can’t imagine coping without them.’ " (source)
When the side effects are taken into consideration, it's a wonder why doctors would prescribe anti-depressants when there are safer & more effective alternatives!! I don't have a lot of space here to list everything so I'm just going to share a few side effects that Harvard has noted: "Some patients taking SSRIs develop insomnia, skin rashes, headaches, joint and muscle pain, stomach upset, nausea, or diarrhea. These problems are usually temporary or mild or both. A more serious potential problem is reduced blood clotting capacity because of a decreased concentration of the neurotransmitter serotonin in platelets. Patients are at increased risk for stomach or uterine bleeding, and are more likely to require a blood transfusion during or after surgery. This risk is about the same as the risk of bleeding with NSAIDs (aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen)." (source)
What is literally the most important element in permanently curing yourself of depression is to think positively. I know, believe me I KNOW how irritating and simplistic that sounds and you've probably heard it 1,001 times. But it's true! Thoughts cause chemical reactions (release of hormones) that cause you to feel emotions. Simply put, you create your emotions and if you think sad or angry thoughts, a chemical (hormonal) response creates an emotion. This isn't philosophy, this is science. "Your emotions are completely governed by your body's responses. In fact, they are the emotions." If you considered how powerful your thoughts are, you would never think another thought again!
You can also use Young Living's (highest quality) essential oils during moments of weakness or sadness. I rely on Joy essential oil to keep my spirits up.
